You are a damn good woman painter!

Art from the perspective of cinema
For years Stefan Koppelkamm has been collecting scenes from motion pictures which deal with art and artists. These films at once shape and mirror popular conceptions of how artists work, how they find their ideas and how they live. But they also show the audience: people who look at art, who talk about art and who sell or buy art.
Based on his archive, Koppelkamm developed 14 new films from which we present a selection of seven episodes. The title How about Art? is a quotation from Mike Nichols’ film The Graduate (1967).
Stefan Koppelkamm’s films invite the audience to recognize themselves in the rituals of the art world: his film Bonsoir, Isabelle! for instance, focuses on the hundred-year-old ritual of the opening. How about Art? reveals not only the stereotypes which shape our reception of art but also those which influence its production: the films A very creative period and You are a damn good woman painter! confront different representations of male and female artists.
The films are complemented by a series of black and white photographs titled Künstlerporträts. They illustrate in a different way how cinema has replaced (art)history by its fictions.
